It is also referred as the tabla-dugga pair as it consists of two drums. The pictures of drums can be seen in the Pushkaras depictions in the Ajanta sculptures. It is said to have originated from the two-faced drum called the mridangam and the pakhawaj. It is a two-piece percussion instrument, and is the principal rhythmic accompaniment to most of the North Indian classical and the light music. The Tabla is one of the most famous instruments of India.
